Rob Machado

Surfing professionally since 1993, Rob Machado is one of American surfing’s most famous faces. His smooth style in the water and casual demeanor on land has earned him acclaim across the globe. And though he still resides in the cozy Southern California beach community where he grew up, he was actually born in Sydney, Australia. Thankfully his parents longed to return to the states and moved their family to Cardiff by the Sea when Rob was three years old. Rob has competed globally but has made it a priority to act locally by maintaining a strong relationship with his community. The annual Rob Machado Surf Classic and Beach Fair held at Cardiff by the Sea supports up and coming surfers with the amateur men’s, women’s and children’s divisions. And the added bonus of a pro demo heat gives spectators a chance to see Rob and his friends from the Association of Surfing Professionals Tour rip it up right in front of their eyes. In addition, Rob hosts his Par 3 Experience golf tournament. This year the tournament raised money for Healing Notes in San Diego, offering musical therapy for terminally ill children. Though he has yet to earn a world title in surfing, Rob’s list of accomplishments is still impressive. In addition to some of his most recent wins, like taking the coveted Pipe Masters title in February at the Monster Energy Drink Pro and earning his third US Open of Surfing title in Huntington Beach this past July, Rob was inducted into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame in September. His name joins the ranks of such legendary surfers as Greg Noll, Layne Beachley, Kelly Slater and Lisa Andersen among many others. Yet podium appearances aren’t the only things that have pushed Rob’s star higher in the sky. Early on in his career he developed a friendship with surf filmmaker Taylor Steele. Rob’s parts in “Momentum,” “Focus,” and “The Show” are arguably more memorable than which contest he won when. Maybe it’s the hair, maybe it’s his smile, or maybe it’s the fact that he’s a genuinely nice guy that keeps Rob’s popularity at the top of the heap. A musician, a father and the ultimate soul surfer Rob remains one of surfing’s most popular icons.
